In 2004, Pierre Jean moved to Montalcino, where he met Lionel Cousin from Cupano, who encouraged him to start making wine, convinced of the extraordinary vocation of the Scarnacuoia terroir. It was in this historical area where Biondi Santi planted the first Sangiovese, 200 years ago.
So it was that in 2006, the Casa Raia adventure began. Pierre Jean rented the vineyards of Ludmilla Temertey’s Scarnacuoia estate, where terraces just below the city walls were planted with vines. The early years were dedicated to great apprenticeships, working alongside biodynamic and natural realities such as Campi di Fonterenza and Pian dell’Orino. After two vintages made in host wineries, he built his own cellar in Montalcino and started bottling directly as of 2009.
In 2011 and 2015, the company was expanded with the planting of new plots of Sangiovese in scattered clusters. Current production includes 5,000 bottles of Brunello, 4,000 of Rosso (as of 2024) and between 8,000 and 10,000 bottles of IGT in Castiglione d’Orcia.
